A Meme??

4 min read
Eyy I don't get tagged very often so why not! Tagged by Pearin !

Rules: Answer the questions (which you can change if you don’t feel like answering certain questions) and then tag 15 of your
followers watchers so you can get to know them (or less, your choice)!

1. Nickname?

Neel, Neelcat, Neeli, Neels, Orange, Oraneel, etc. etc. mostly Neel though.

2. Gender?

eehhhhh idk, pronouns are she/her tho

3. Star sign?

Taurus I think

4. Eye colour?

grey-blue

5. Sexuality?

Complicated, but easiest to just say I'm not straight.

6. Hogwarts house?

Hufflepuff!

7. Favourite animal, fantasy or otherwise?

CATS

8. Average hours spent sleeping?

7-8 hours. It's about the only health thing I'm good at maintaining lol.

9. Dogs or cats?

Cats!

10. Which of your own arts is your favorite and why?

Ah man idk, I make too much art. I think for the sake of narrowing it down, I'm gonna post some printmaking:

I was really proud of this series because honestly? it matched the mood of the song it's meant to accompany /so well/ and I proved to myself that wow. I can illustrate. and not only that, but I can stick to longer projects. It turned out really well, I learned a lot, and I surprised myself. I hope that I can finish more projects like this one, because planning things and then actually finishing them feels good.

11. What’s your dream trip?

Honestly travel is exhausting and I think I need to stay put for awhile before I can fantasize about it.

12. What’s your dream job?

My dream job is somewhere in the commercial art industry, in a work environment with coworkers (for the sake of my mental health my aim is not to be freelancing full time) that I like, doing work that feels at least somewhat fulfilling.

13. When did you make this account?

Oh man, like 2012. It's my second account, the first one was made the year before and then never used.

14. Do you watch anime, if so what is your favorite?

I love Little Witch Academia, the art style is sO CUTE and I just <33. When I was younger I really liked Ouran High School Host Club, and I've recently started watching Ranma 1/2. But honestly LWA is my fav, it's too good.

15. How many pets do you have?

2.5! I have two cats at home and a substitute kitty who doesn't belong to me but lives with me when I'm in school.

16. Videogames you enjoy?

I'm not a big video game person, but I really love Animal Crossing (ACWW and ACNL are my favorites) and also The Sims.

17. Favourite ice cream?

Cookie dough!

18. How often do you read?

Not as often as I'd like. I have trouble sustaining my attention for long enough, which sucks because I used to love to read. I really need to start listening to audiobooks again.

19. Favourite study locations?

Unfortunately I can't focus anywhere so I don't really have favorites, they're all associated with frustration at this point.

20. Favourite Bands/Musical Artists?

My two current favorites are Oh Land and Fiona Apple!

21. IM ADDING AN EXTRA QUESTION if you have OCs who is your favorite and why?

I adore my OCs tbh. My favorite is always Danae though, she's my most developed and I feel like I grew up with her. She's... not a particularly likable character but I poured my heart and soul into her development and she'll always be special to me.

Tagging uhhh BlueRocketMouse bc why not. Also no one else bc i don't want to bother people.

Hello all! It's been awhile since I've written one of my long discussion posts about art, but I've been thinking a lot lately about digtial art and its place in the art world. I've written plenty of posts in defense of digital art and its validity in the past, but at this point, asking if digital art is 'real art' is an old argument people are probably tired of hearing about. And though I do occasionally hear negative comments about how digital art is cheating, those are few and far between enough that to keep writing about it is more like constructing a straw man argument than anything else. Regardless, I still think there's a lot to talk about in the comparison of traditional artwork to digital, and the juxtaposition between commercial and fine art.

I've talked on and off with my advisor about the role of digital art in society. She taught a contemporary art history course that discussed the avant garde and how modern art was historically a push against old ideas of what art really is about. This led to a conversation about the place of digital art in all of this. At first, she dismissed the idea of digital art having a place in the avant garde, mostly due to its associations. Digital art is often thought of, in a fine art context, as a lower form of art. I think that large part of this is that since its conception, digital art has quickly placed itself primarily into a commercial context. It's used for design, concept art, animation, comics, and illustration with growing frequency. Digital mediums are a valuable asset to the commercial art industry because they are fast, increasingly portable, and efficient. In order to make it into the fine art world, lines are going to be blurred. Digital artists must do the unexpected to be recognized in a fine art capacity. But what that looks like? I'm not really sure yet.

Die-orden-der-nacht-1080px by emberonis

The other day, we went to the art museum and stood in front Der Orden der Nacht by Anselm Kiefer. The painting is absolutely massive, and absolutely awe inducing. My advisor told me, "now this is something digital art can't do," and she was right. There is something incredibly powerful about a painting that looks like you could step into it, especially at life size. This painting is not done justice on a computer screen or in a photo. I don't feel the need to assert that digital art has the power to do anything traditional art can, but I can't help but feel like debating that in the first place is missing the point.

It's telling to observe the push to make digital art feel more traditional. Artists like Kyle T. Webster have put years into making digital brushes and artwork have the feeling and texture of traditional mediums. It could be asked why this is even necessary, if they are two separate mediums valid and independent of each other. Why would digital art need to mimic traditional art? Personally, something I have always disliked about digital art is the often almost plastic look of a lot of digital pieces. I'm a painter through and through, and I thrive on texture. While I've never specifically wanted my digital art to look traditional, I've always strived to separate it from that ultra smooth digital look. There's nothing inherently wrong with that aesthetic, but it's not my thing. It's too precise, too controlled, and would represent my work poorly if I tried to confine myself to it. As a beginner, I was obsessed with having smooth, perfect line work. I found so much freedom and had so much more fun when I let go of the notion that digital art had to be clean and perfect to be good. It doesn't at all! So, in both the traditional and digital art world we have these ideas of what art is, and particularly what good art is. But contemporary art has always been about pushing the boundaries and redefining art, and I don't see why digital art can't also be the means of that.

That being said, digital art and traditional art don't need to be compared to each other, they don't need to serve the same purpose. Digital art could someday be fine art, but it doesn't need to be. Fine art is not the only artwork of value. My work does not need to do anything that Anslem Kiefer's does, and his work never needed to do what mine does.

I'm not sure I ever got to my point, or if I even have one yet... I might write a follow up journal if I can come to a solid conclusion, but for now? What do you think? How do you feel about digital art in the context of fine art or commercial art? How do you think digital art will be seen by future art historians, if they even take note of it at all?

Thanks for reading <3 - Neel

I seriously love this meme x3 so here we go!!

To participate in this meme, comment on my journal! For the first ten, I will put your avatar in this journal as well as the three deviations from your gallery that I like most!

If you are featured in this journal, you have to submit a journal like this one and do the same thing, putting me in the first spot. The idea here is not to get a free feature, but to spread art around for everyone. If you are featured here but do not participate by posting a journal of your own, I'll remove you from the list.

Happy Pumpkin Day by Beachpie  Maps by Beachpie  Pika in the Forest by Beachpie

I'm a huuuge fan of rough paintings, illustrations, and interesting color choices. Beachpie is fantastic at all three! I've long admired her use of color and markmaking, it gives her work such a fun feeling and I just never want to stop looking at it. Also, when she does backgrounds, they're absolutely stunning.

2. :iconruki-ki:

Love Story by Ruki-KiChimera by Ruki-KiPupper P2U by Ruki-Ki

Okay, so I dug back a little deep for a few of these, but that's just because I love them so much <333 Ruki is one of my longtime favorite artists. Her expressions are fantastic, and when she does backgrounds, oh my. Never disappointed. If you love adorable art and gorgeous linework, definitely go follow Ruki-Ki!
